About ear infections
Ear infections are a very common condition, especially in children. They are caused by bacteria or viruses and can affect the outer or middle part of the ear. Ear infections may cause swelling, pain, fever, discharge. hearing changes and sometimes a build-up of fluids in the ear. Some infections will easily go away on their own, others may need some treatment or symptom relief.

Patient Information - Ear Infections
Caring for yourself or your child at home
- Take all medicines exactly as prescribed, and finish the course.
- Use paracetamol or ibuprofen to ease pain or reduce fever.
- If ear drops were prescribed, keep the ear dry while using them.
What to expect
- Symptoms usually improve within 1–3 days of starting treatment.
- You may notice mild discharge from the ear, which should lessen over time.
When to return
- If pain, fever or discharge is getting worse.
- If symptoms do not start to improve within 2–3 days.
- If your child has repeated ear infections or trouble hearing.
